Client requirements

In Spring 2016 IETG were appointed by a UK Water Company to monitor Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) in various manholes across their sewer network.

The aim of the project was to monitor levels of H2S over several weeks to see if the reasons for high levels of H2S (and associated odour) could be determined.

Previous attempts at monitoring had used older technology that required weekly visits to download the data and involved a high level of maintenance.

IETG Solution

IETG used their recently purchased NivuLog H2S logger to solve the equipment issues, using its confined spaces safety teams to sucessfully install a fleet of loggers at their clients preferred manholes. This involved gas detection, forced ventalitation and working on the highway.

The equipment was tested on site and connected via GPRS to IETG’s online data hosting platform which our clients can use to view and access the data at any time.

Once installed, the units transferred data remotely and our in-house team of data analysts reviewed the telemetered data on a daily basis and scheduled maintenance only as and when required.

The Results

The data loggers worked successfully for several months with minimal maintenance. From the data our client was able to see H2S increases at very specific times which enabled them to locate the source of a discharge that was entering their sewer that they had previously been unaware of.

The client has now relocated the loggers to help them with their investigations in other areas.
